The year 2011 witnessed a number of Sporting Events. We have tried to summarize them below.

2011 IPC Alpine Skiing World Championships

The 2011 IPC Alpine Skiing World Championships was held in Sestrierie, Italy, from January 14 to January 23, 2011. IPC stands for International Paralympic Committee.

Ski  trophy.jpgThe International Ski Federation, known by its name in French, Fédération Internationale de Ski (FIS) is the main international organization for ski sports. Founded by 14 member nations in 1924 in Chamonix, France, the organization now has a membership of 111 national ski associations and is based in Oberhofen am Thunersee, Switzerland. The FIS Alpine World Ski Championships 2011 were held in Garmisch-Partenkirchen, Bavaria, Germany, from February 7 to February 20, 2011.

2011 Cricket World Cup 
2011 Cricket World Cup was held in Sri Lanka, India, and Bangladesh from February19 – April
Wankhade Stadium Mumbai-Finals
The tournament was won by India who defeated Sri Lanka by 6 wickets. India became the first host-nation to win the world cup with final played in the host country itself. Captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni played a captain's knock of unbeaten 91 in the final and was adjudged man of the match.


IFAF (International Federation of American Football also known as the IFAF World Cup)

On July 16th, 2011, the 4th World Championship of American Football final took place where USA defeated rivals Canada with a score of 50-7 in front of 20,000 spectators.

 Fina (Fédération Internationale de Natation- translated from French is "International Swimming Federation"), the word’s governing body in aquatics organized the 2011 FINA Men’s Water Polo World League. After a preliminary round, the Super Final was held in Firenze (Florence), Italy from June 21–26, 2011. Serbia ended up being champions, defending the title acquired the previous year.

The 13th IAAF World Championships in Athletics was an international athletics competition that was held in Daegu, South Korea. It started on 27 August 2011 and finished on 4 September 2011.The United States topped the medal tally with 25 (12 gold, 8 silver, and 5 bronze) medals.

2011 World Wheelchair Curling Championship

Curling is a sport in which players slide stones across a sheet of ice towards a target area.

The 2011 World Wheelchair Curling Championship was held in Prague, Czech Republic from February 22 - March 1, 2011.Ten mixed gender teams competed for four playoff spots. In the final, Canada's Jim Armstrong defeated Scotland's Aileen Neilson in the final in 7 ends. Teams will gain qualification points from this event for the upcoming Winter Paralympic Games in Sochi in 2014.

2011 World Fencing Championships
The World Championships in Fencing is an annual competition organized by the Federation Internationale d’Escrime or FIE, (International Fencing Federation in English). The 2011 World Fencing Championships was held at Catania, Italy from 8–16 October.

    2011 World Figure Skating Championships
Opening_ceremony Figure skating Russia.JPGThe competition was originally assigned to Nagano, Japan, and later moved to Tokyo, to be held from March 21–27, 2011 at the Yoyogi National Gymnasium with the Japan Skating Federation as the host organization. It was postponed in the wake of the 2011 Tōhoku earthquake and tsunami and later reassigned to Moscow, Russia.

2011 UCI Road World Championships
The 2011 UCI Road World Championships took place in Copenhagen, Denmark, over 19–25 September 2011. The event consisted of a road race and a time trial for men, women, men under 23. It was the first time that Denmark has hosted the event since 1956, when it was held in Copenhagen.

The World Junior Ice Hockey Championships was hosted by the United States from December 26 (2010)–January 5 ,2011 . The games were played in Western New York, at HSBC Arena in Buffalo and Niagara University's Dwyer Arena in Lewiston. Russia won the gold medal with a 5–3 victory over Canada in the championship game, after completing the biggest comeback in the WJHC history. Being down 3–0 after two periods, the Russians scored five goals in the third period to capture their first WJHC gold medal since 2003. The host team, the United States, won the bronze medal with a 4–2 win over Sweden.

Super Bowl XLV

Super Bowl XLV was an American football  game between the American Football Conference champion Pittsburgh Steelers and the National Football Conference champion Green Bay Packers to decide the Nationial Football League  champion for the 2010 season .
The game was held at Cowboys Stadium in Arlington, Texas on February 6, 2011. The Packers defeated the Steelers by the score of 31–25, becoming the 2nd ever NFC wild card team to win the Super Bowl. Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers was named Super Bowl MVP, completing 24 of 39 passes for 304 yards and three touchdowns.
Pittsburgh advanced to the Super Bowl with two close wins in the playoffs. After a first-round bye, the Steelers defeated their division rival, the #5 Baltimore Ravens 31–24, with Ben Roethlisberger's 58-yard completion to Antonio Brown on third down and 19 setting up Rashard Mendenhall's game winning 2-yard touchdown run with 1:33 left in the game. Roethlisberger finished with 226 passing yards and two touchdowns, while the defense forced three turnovers and sacked Baltimore QB Joe Flacco five times, three by James Harrison.
Green Bay next faced the #2 Chicago Bears in the NFC championship game, beating them 21–14. This time Rodgers had a rougher day than his previous two games, throwing no touchdown passes and being intercepted twice. But he still threw for 244 yards and scored a 1-yard touchdown run, while Starks added 74 rushing yards, including a touchdown run in the second quarter. Meanwhile, Green Bay's defense knocked Chicago quarterback Jay Cutler out of the game and intercepted three passes, one of which was returned 18 yards for a touchdown by B.J. Raji. The other two were made by rookie Sam Sheilds, who recorded his second interception near his own end zone with 37 seconds left to put the game away.

October 28, 2011:


MLB World Series was held in Arlington, Texas and St. Louis, Missouri. The teams taking part were The Texas Rangers, and The St. Louis Cardinals. This series went 7 games, and St. Louis pulled out and won, led by MVP Kyle Freese. It is rumored to be the most exciting World Series in history.

Cardinal's MVP David Freese proved himself in the 7 game series against the Texas Rangers. Freese had an error in game 6, but battled back in game 7 to prove himself MVP. Freese was only the second player in history to hit home runs in both game six and game seven! 

June 12, 2011:
The Dallas Mavericks and the Miami heat faced off in an epic 6 games. These two teams have never played in a playoff game before. The Mavericks have never won a championship in their franchise history, while Miami has won one in its history. The Mavericks won in 6 games with the series score of 4-2. The Mavericks won their first championship on this date.

Heat Lost

Pictured left is the NBA MVP LeBron James. LeBron is a great athlete and is very talented in the sport of basketball. He, Chris Bosh, and Dwayne Wade formed the "Dream Team" in Miami this year, because they all joined. The Miami Heat lost to the Dallas Mavericks, and LeBron did not live up to his full potential, while Dwayne Wade did. James will be determined to prove his dominance next season though. 


April 4, 2011: 

The University of Connecticut faced Butler University in the NCAA finals. After making it past all the rounds before, both teams were poised to win. Led by All-Star Kemba Walker, Uconn pulled out for the win, and sent Butler home empty-handed twice in a row.


Kemba Walker and teammates celebrate after defeating their championship opponent Butler University 53-41. It was an off night for both teams, but Kemba led the team in made field goals, and scored points.  Walker finished with 16 points, which was higher than any member of Butler. Walker graduated from UCONN as a junior, and will soon make his name in the NBA, when the season starts.

College Football
January 10, 2011:

The BCS National Championship Football matchup occurred between #1 Oregon, and # 2 Auburn. The Oregon Ducks were favored to win this game, but Auburn pulled out 22-19 for the win. Led by Heisman Trophy winner, Cam Newton, Auburn upset the top ranked Oregon in a minute by minute thriller!

In the days before the BCS National championship between Auburn and Oregon, the stakes were high. Two Heisman candidates face off in the Game of the century. Auburn and Oregon were very well matched. Cam Newton the fast and powerful quarterback was a stong point for Auburn. Also, Oregon's explosive running back, Lamichael James gave Oregon an X-Factor. Cam Newton and his Auburn Tigers defeated James and his Oregon Ducks, and was MVP of the game!

July 17, 2011:

The Women’s World Cup soccer was played in Germany. After an exciting regular time, the score was tied 2:2. It went into extra time where no one scored. This made the game the most exciting ever. It went into penalty kicks, and Japan pulled out to win 3:1 on penalty kicks.
After Alex Morgan of the U.S. scored a goal in the 69th minute, Japan's Aya Miyama scored a 81st minute goal. After regular time and extra time, the score was tied and Japan won on penalty kicks..

National  Hockey
September 18, 2011:

The NHL Stanley Cup took place in Vancouver between the Vancouver Canucks and the Boston Bruins. Both these franchises have not won a championship for a very long time. Some say that these teams have been in a “championship drought”. After 7 games, the Boston Bruins pulled out 4-0 and beat the Canucks, for their first championship since 1972!
