Forests are very important for mankind. The depletion in the area under forests over the years has made it a great matter of concern for us. The United Nations designated the year 2011 as the International Year of Forests with an objective of spreading awareness and for the sustainable development of forests.

International Year of Chemistry

2011 was also recognized as the International Year of Chemistry by the United Nations. Achievements in the field of chemistry and its contribution to mankind were recognized. The events were coordinated with the help of IUPAC, the International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry and UNESCO. Estonia became part of the Euro zone

713px-EU-Estonia.svg.pngEstonia became the part of the Euro zone on 1st January by successfully clearing the Maastricht criteria. It officially adopted the Euro currency and is the 17th country to join the Union. This has helped them support their economic stability and also improve trade relations with other European countries. The changeover from the older currency, Kroon to Euro was very profitable for the country.

Prince William, the eldest son of Charles, Prince of Wales married Catherine Middleton on 29th April 2011 in the Westminster Abbey. It was the biggest wedding of the year. About 2 million people watched the wedding creating a record. It was a splendid event.

Space Shuttle Atlantis STS-135

STS-135, the last mission of Atlantis was launched on 8 July 2011. It was authorized by the US President Barack Obama. It landed in the NASA’s Kennedy Space Centre in Florida on 21 July 2011. It orbited the Earth 4,848 times.



India- Bangladesh Border Pact

One year border conflict of India and Bangladesh was resolved on 6th September 2011 and a pact was signed between the two. It was signed by the Indian Prime Minister, Dr. Manmohan Singh and Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina in Dhaka.
