[Gandhi by Tanya]Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi, also known as Mahatama Gandhi ,was born on 2 October 1869 at Porbander, in the state of Gujarat, India. He was an average student. He got married to Kasturba Gandhi when he was only 13 years of age. In 1888, he went to England to study law.In 1893, he went to South Africa to work in a law company. In South Africa , he had to face severe racial discrimination which urged him to fight against injustice and discrimination. He organized the Indian community of South Africa into a political force. He developed a method of mass agitation called Satyagrah which was based on truth and non-violence. The essence of which was to oppose the wrong without hurting the oppressor. The true Satyagrahi would not show any sign of hatred.

  In 1915, Gandhiji returned to India and took up the cause of the poor farmer of Champaran in Bihar. photo by DanishIn 1917, he went to Champaran and forced the British to withdraw the excessive tax imposed on the farmers. He soon became the leader of the masses. Gandhiji was a man of the masses who understood the problems of the common people. He led a very simple life. He used to wear a single cloth because the poor people of India did not have enough clothes to wear. He started lots of movements like Non-cooperation movement, Civil disobedience movement and the Quit India movement. His persistence with these movement forced The British rulers to leave India and India became Independent on 15 August 1947.

Mahatma Gandhi was shot dead on 30 January 1948 by a Hindu fanatic named Nathu Ram Godse.

Mahatma means “A Noble Soul” . Mahatma Gandhi remained true to the name given to him by the masses with whom he stayed connected till his last breath. He was nick named Bapu meaning Father.
