What is a Landslide?

A landslide can occur in almost any hilly region of the world. Landslides can be slow or fast and occur when masses of rock and earth slip off a slide down a slope. They are usually activated by some other type of disaster like storms, earthquakes, volcanoes, or fires.

Landslides develop when water accumulates in the ground which turns the earth to mud. The mud can flow quickly and can pick up trees, boulders, cars, and even people as it gains strength and speed.

Landslides can be very devistating threatening communities and the people that live within those communities. Landslides can happen practically anywhere given the right conditions and they can be forceful enough to throw cars right through churches like in the picture (left) and can take lives with little warning.

What Can You Do ...

What you should do if a landslide or debris flow occurs:

  • Stay alert and awake.

  • Consider leaving if it is safe to do so.

  • Listen for any unusual sounds that might indicate moving debris, such as trees cracking or boulders knocking together.

  • If you are near a stream or channel, be alert for any sudden increase or decrease in water flow and for a change from clear to muddy water.

  • Be especially alert when driving.
