Happy birthday

In my family we go out for dinner where ever the birthday person chooses. If it is one of my parents, they open presents in the evening, if it is my brother or me, we open presents from each other in the morning and the rest in the evening. Whose ever birthday it is gets to make decisions (like what to do, play a game or watch a movie) and we try to make it a special day for them.

On my birthday, we get up extra early and get doughnuts from Krispy Kreme (yum). Then, we get back and open presents. I get anything from clothes to games to arts and crafts. Later in the day, my mom bakes my favorite cake, and we light one candle for each year how old I am, and one for good luck. Then I make a wish and blow out the candles. Sometimes, I have a birthday party, but either way, family comes over and celebrates.

Here in the U.S., the traditions for celebrating birthdays are relatively universal. On your birthday, you usually eat cake and ice cream and get presents from your family. Then, you usually invite all your friends over for a party or other fun activity. They usually get you presents too. All in all, the presents, cake, and ice cream make birthdays a very fun occasion. If someone's birthday is on a school day, they usually bring in something like cookies or cupcakes to hand out in class. Most teachers will have the class sing "Happy Birthday" for the person.
